ID.me began as a tool that allowed members of the military to securely submit and prove their identity online. This new capability gave military members access to the thousands of discounts and exclusive savings they could previously only receive in-store because merchants had no way to check a physical ID card online. Soon after, we began to issue digital ID cards for students, first responders, and teachers as well.

The success of those projects led us to wonder: why doesn’t digital identity work like identity in the physical world where people have ID cards they can easily display to prove their identity?

To make trusted online interactions more convenient, we built ID.me, a secure digital wallet, to store all of your digital ID cards so that you can easily prove your identity and group statuses online. Your ID.me wallet login – the e-mail and password you create when you sign up with ID.me – will always remain the same even as you add more and more digital ID cards to your wallet.

One thing that hasn’t changed is our promise to our members: your personal information belongs to you. You, and only you, control how your information is shared while ID.me deploys bank-grade encryption to keep your data safe at all times.
